On The Fringe of the Philly Art Scene
Details
This year's Philadelphia Fringe Festival began in September, but preparations for the prestigious performing arts festival were in full swing for months—and that's something Miriam Hwang-Carlos '17 knows quite a lot about. This summer, she served as the Guide and Information Management intern for Philadelphia FringeArts, the organization responsible for the yearly festival.
Much of Hwang-Carlos' job was focused on the creation of, and fact checking for, the festival guide, a print book that gives the location, date, and details for every show during the month-long theater and arts event. Occasionally, she was called upon to use her artistic skills to draw images for the guide.
She has also been writing for the FringeArts blog, which gives previews of festival shows through artist interviews and theater spotlights.
Hwang-Carlos was one of 27 students sponsored through Haverford's John B. Hurford '60 Center for the Arts and Humanities internship programs this summer. She is the seventh Haverfordian to intern with FringeArts, through a partnership between the organizations.
The summer experience at FringeArts was an exciting one for Hwang-Carlos, who hails from Sewanee, Tennessee.“I didn't grow up near any cities, so it's been very interesting to adapt to a new environment,” she said.“I've really loved getting to know Philadelphia more, whether it's through drawing maps of the city, interviewing actors who work here, or just walking to work.”
The 2014 Philadelphia Fringe Festival will take place from September 5-21, 2014. For tickets, or to read an e-copy of the festival guide that Hwang-Carlos worked on, visit the FringeArts website.
