Reporting on Education
Details
After taking courses in urban and education policy and assisting teachers in Philadelphia-area schools, this summer Cathy Quero '15 is exploring her long-time passion for education from a new angle: journalism. With support from the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship, she has had the opportunity to intern with the Philadelphia Public School Notebook, a nonprofit news service that covers public education issues in the city.
During her first week on the job, Quero helped facilitate the Notebook's annual Turning the Page for Change celebration, which marked the organization's 20th anniversary and honored local high school journalists. Since then, she has divided her time between writing news articles for the website and helping prepare articles and demographic data for the organization's annual Fall Guide to Schools. Quero, a political science major with a minor in Educational Studies, says the internship allows her to apply the insight and experience she has gained through her coursework and placements in local schools. Her reporting assignments have also allowed her to learn about the city and its education system by introducing her to movement leaders, activists, and students. One of her favorite stories sent her to a youth advocacy organization called Youth United for Change, where she interviewed the director, Andi Perez. (You can read the article here.)
