The anthropology major will serve as a teaching assistant in an English language class at a public university.
Nour El-Youssef '12 will be traveling to Brazil thanks to the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) she was recently awarded. The ETA grants are part of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, which promotes cross-cultural exchange by sending recent college grads, students in graduate school, and young professionals to foreign countries for research, travel, or English teaching experience.
El-Youssef's Fulbright grant will support her placement in a public university to serve as a teaching assistant in an English language class.“The placement will involve helping students who are pursuing a degree in teaching English as a foreign language,” says El-Youssef, who has not yet received word on where in Brazil she will be placed.
El-Youssef, who graduated from Haverford with a major in anthropology and a concentration in Africana Studies, has previous experience in Latin America. During the summer of her junior year she received a grant from Haverford's Center for Peace and Global Citizenship (CPGC) to travel to San Marcos, Nicaragua, to do research on the lives of street children. (That subject became the focus of her senior thesis.) After her graduation, she spent the summer in Mexico—again supported by the CPGC—assisting Associate Professor of Political Science Craig Borowiak in his research on the solidarity economy. She also did volunteer work at Comunidad AC, a Mexican non-profit organization located in Cuernavaca, Morelos.
A native of Rochester, Minn., El-Youssef currently lives in Philadelphia and works as a paralegal in the family law unit of Philadelphia Legal Assistance. “As a paralegal, I provide legal advice to clients and conduct community outreach,” she says.“I also coordinate a Department of Justice grant designed to provide holistic legal services to victims of sexual assault. “ In addition, she manages a legal assistance hotline for immigrant women.
“I hope to transfer much of my experience working with non-English speakers to the teaching assistantship,” says El-Youssef, who plans to pursue a career in education.
