NEW ATHLETICS STAFF MEMBERS

Haverford is pleased to announce these appointments in the athletics department:

Head Athletic Trainer Curt Mauger replaces the invaluable Dan Evans, who served for 12 years.

Assistant Athletic Trainer Melissa Cruice follows in the footsteps of Kevin Courtney, who was the popular interim assistant trainer the last two years.

Multicultural Recruiting Intern Ty Taylor has been a volunteer assistant men's basketball coach here the last two seasons. He takes over for Leanne Cole, who in May moved to a new role at the College as associate director of annual giving after three productive years as the College's initial recruiting intern

Faculty Athletic Representative Anne Preston of the economics department replaces historian Alex Kitroeff, who finished up a superb three-year stint in the key position of liaison between the faculty and the athletic program.

Mauger is only Haverford's seventh head athletic trainer in 80 years, as far as we can tell, in a distinguished list which includes Ragland (Doc) Leake, Dick Morsch, Mike Therriault, Lesley Rogan, Lisa Peoples, and Dan Evans.

Curt is a 1998 graduate of West Chester University, where he spent the last year as an assistant trainer after having earned a master's degree in exercise and sport science at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Curt also was head trainer at Greensboro College, a Division III institution in North Carolina, in 2001-02, but he and his wife, natives of this area, decided to come home a year ago. He has taught training courses at West Chester, Greensboro, and UNC as well.

Melissa Cruice finished her master's degree in exercise science at the University of Delaware this year with a concentration in biomechanics. She won the award as the outstanding senior student athletic trainer at Delaware as an undergraduate there in 1999. Melissa served two years as assistant athletic trainer at Delaware State University, was a graduate assistant trainer and clinical instructor back at her alma mater, U. of Delaware, and has worked in a wide variety of camps and clinics.

Ty Taylor is a graduate of College Misericordia in Dallas, Pa., where he played several varsity sports and held many important campus offices. Ty also coached at Misericordia and was an assistant girls' basketball coach at Lansdale Catholic High School and head girls' hoop mentor at Radnor High. Ty took the Fencor AAU basketball team of Ft. Washington, Pa., to the top 10 in the 2001 AAU national tourney in Tulsa, Okla.

Taylor has also had considerable administrative, business, and social-service experience. He will continue to assist with the men's basketball team while he heads out to high schools looking for top scholar-athletes who are students of color as well as maintaining liaison with students on campus and monitoring all student-athletes' academic progress.

Associate Professor of Economics Anne Preston is a Princeton graduate who earned her Ph.D. at Harvard. She has come to know Haverford athletics well through serving as a faculty representative on the steering (planning) committee for the new Gardner Integrated Athletic Center. Anne's major interests in her field are labor economics, applied econometrics, macroeconomics, and economics of public policy. Alex Kitroeff remains on Haverford's faculty, though he'll be on leave second semester of 2003-04, and no doubt he'll be visible (and audible) in his favorite seat in the Walton Field grandstands in just a couple of weeks as soccer season begins.
