Haverford alumnus Frank Conroy '58, director of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, is featured in the acclaimed new film Stone Reader, which will open on Friday, April 25, at Ritz Theatres in Philadelphia.
Stone Reader is the story of filmmaker Mark Moskowitz's yearlong search for Dow Mossman, the author of The Stones of Summer, a novel he bought in 1972 as an 18-year-old student. Twenty-five years later, Moskowitz picked up the book and read it through for the first time. After finding no trace of the author or anyone who could remember him, Moskowitz began his quest.
Crisscrossing the country, he interviews Conroy, literary agents, critics, publishers, and Mossman's classmates from the Iowa Writers' Workshop. This leads to discussions about the nature of creativity, the power of books, and the relationship between reader and author.
Stone Reader is currently showing at selected theaters across the country and will also be included in Roger Ebert's 5th annual Overlooked Film Festival, April 23 through April 27 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. On April 22nd, Moskowitz was interviewed on WHYY's Radio Times.
Moskowitz, who lives in Chester Springs, Pa., also made Haverford's "Educating to Lead, Educating to Serve" campaign video which was unveiled in New York City in April 2002.
