The John B. Hurford '60 Humanities Center presents the theater group Dead Genius Productions in the original play It or Her, Saturday, Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. in Lunt Basement.
Recently relocated from Philadelphia to Providence, R.I., Dead Genius Productions is composed of four Haverford alumni: scholar/actor/director Christian DuComb '01, dancer/choreographer Alison D'Amato '02, playwright Alena Smith '02, and lighting/sound/set designer Matt Sharp '02. The group produces“sweet, absurd, and culturally savvy performances that defy easy classification.” The members all share a strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.
It or Her—written by Smith, acted by DuComb, designed by Sharp, and directed by special guest Paige McGinley—was first performed in September 2006 at the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival. The play explores the feverish psyche of a collector of figurines who has sequestered himself in the basement of his suburban home. Like a mad scientist of patterns and paranoias, he plays with his objects, fervently hoping to discover what he calls "the ultimate arrangement" before his dark hideout is invaded. It or Her continues Dead Genius' exploration of a social order desperate to convince us that possessions matter more than other people.
This engagement is part of a weekend residency for Dead Genius, who will run workshops for Haverford and Bryn Mawr College students in the Campus Center on Jan. 27 and 28.
