Marianne Weil's new exhibit,“Los Millares: Recent Bronzes and Monotypes” at New York's Kouros Gallery was recently featured in this month's Art in America.
The review, entitled“Marianne Weil: Kouros” discusses the influence of the prehistoric upon Weil's work, and provides insight into the lost wax and patina processes that lend her sculptures an authentic“excavated” look. Weil has traveled extensively to neolithic sites throughout Europe, most recently to an island off the coast of Spain, and employs many of the same techniques used by early artists. The media may be diverse, but this latest exhibit, featuring sculpture, watercolor, monotype, and wall relief, contain similar motifs and color in what in Art In America describes as“dialogues.” The reviewer writes,“Weil's search for personal vocabulary that reinvents the lost ritual functions of excavated treasures seemed implicit in that assembly.”
An award winning sculptor, Weil studied sculpture and stonemasonry at Goddard College, received a master's in sculpture from the School of Visual Arts, and taught at Studio In A School Association in New York City and State University of New York at Stony Brook before coming to Haverford college.
