Facilities
The Department of Music moved into its newly expanded and renovated spaces for performance, rehearsal, practice, study and learning in Roberts Hall in the summer of 2021.
Individual practice rooms, offices, and ample storage areas for musical instruments are found throughout the facility. Public concerts are held in the Michael Jaharis Recital Hall and in Marshall Auditorium of Roberts Hall.
Michael Jaharis Recital Hall
Jaharis Recital Hall is the centerpiece of the new facility, and functions as a flexible space for performance, rehearsals, workshops, and classroom instruction.
It features fixed seating for 80, plus ample floor seating to rehearse a full orchestra or large chorus, or seat audience members near chamber music performers in an intimate setting. The space boasts excellent acoustics, and a peerless view of the campus and duck pond. It also features advanced capacities for sound and video recording and multimedia performance.
Nan and Bill Harris Music Library
The Harris Music Library supports all aspects of performance, study, and research concerning music.
It houses a rich array of scores, chamber music parts, critical and theoretical writings about music, audio recordings, video recordings, and core reference works. There is a quiet reading room, the stack areas, and the public reading room (which is part of the Allen C. Fischer 1959 Atrium). The Harris Music Library also subscribes to a vast set of digital and streaming collections--scores, journals, reference works, audio and video, from around the world. Audio-video and computer workstations provide access to the collection, its finding aids, and to various digital tools for music editing and sound recording. Portable Keyboard Check-Out
Allen C. Fischer 1959 Atrium
The Fischer Atrium serves as the key meeting ground for all areas of musical study at Haverford, linking the Jaharis Recital Hall and the Harris Music Library (for which it serves as the casual reading room) to our classrooms, practice rooms, faculty and administrative offices, and to the adjacent Marshall Auditorium.
Like Jaharis, it boasts direct views of the duck pond and surrounding green spaces. An outdoor patio and seating space connects the building to Fletcher-Silver Walk, the nature trail, and nearby Haverford Septa station, which is an easy five-minute walk from the facilities.
