6 Ways Haverford House Fellows Are Supporting Social Justice in Philly, Region
Details
Haverford House Fellowships provide opportunities for recent graduates to work with and learn from boundary-pushing social sector organizations.
Here are six specific ways fellows have supported social justice in Philly during their 2016-17 terms.
1. At Community Legal Services of Philadelphia (CLS), Tamar Hoffman '16, works with the Housing Unit as a paralegal, advocating for low-income individuals facing eviction from public and private housing.
2. Also at CLS, Anthony Marqusee '16, is a paralegal in the Employment Unit, addressing wage theft, discrimination, criminal records, unemployment compensation, and more.
3. Katie Rowlett '16 spends her days in the science lab, working with middle and high school students from across the Philadelphia School District as part of the University City Science Center's FirstHand Initiative. FirstHand aims to ensure broader access to the resources of the Science Center, a leading science and technology research park.
4. As a paralegal in the migrant farmworker unit at Philadelphia Legal Assistance (PLA), Itzel Delgado-Gonzalez '16 not only assists the attorneys in her office with federal tax and migrant farmworker cases, but additionally does outreach to farmworkers across the state of Pennsylvania about their worker rights.
5. Also at PLA, Kaziah White '16 is a paralegal in the Family Law Unit, focusing primarily on custody and protection from abuse, prioritizing survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
6. At the Education Law Center, Michaela Ward '16, is doing research and policy work focusing on fair school funding in the city of Philadelphia and across the state of Pennsylvania. She’s currently working on a report that shows the way the state funding system consistently disadvantages communities of color and poor communities.

Haverford House is one of many programs overseen by Haverford College's Center for Peace and Global Citizenship (CPGC). The CPGC's mission is to advance peace and social justice through research, education, and action. As one of three campus-wide centers, the CPGC supports students, faculty, and staff efforts to integrate consequential action for peace and social justice with the serious, sustained critical inquiry that is central to an elite liberal arts education.
As expressed on the President's page, learning for greater ethical purposes has always been central to the college's commitments. This is made clear through the Haverford motto: "Not more learned, but imbued with better learning." Haverford offers students many opportunities to engage fundamental issues of inequality and social justice. The CPGC supports these campus-wide commitments through catalyzing student internships relating to social justice, student and faculty research on peace and social justice, community-engaged coursework, visiting speakers, and much more.
