Class time will include both translation and discussion, with attention to such topics as narrative structure, the voice of the singer/narrator, the figure of the hero, Homeric society and its values, the treatment of battle and war, and the relationship between gods and humans. We will also consider the Homeric question, oral composition and its implications, Homeric language, and special features of Homeric style: type scene, ring composition, formula, and simile. We will look at different translations of the Iliad, and at the ways in which the poem has been read (and rewritten) at different times; we will also practice reading aloud in the dactylic hexameter meter of the Iliad.; Prerequisite(s): Completion of GREK 002 or equivalent, or instructor consent Div: III; Approach: Critical Interpretation (CI); Humanities, A: Meaning, Interpretation (Texts) (Hav: HU, A) |
