We will approach Athenian ideas such as democracy, citizenship, science, religion, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity through Greek drama, philosophy, painting, sculpture, architecture and more. We will also approach the legacy and history of Athens through its reception: the way Athenian practices and ideals have been incorporated into, and at times show up unexpectedly in, modern culture. Throughout the semester, students will engage in active-learning pedagogy through a series of hands-on workshops, re-creations and competitive games, all in the spirit of the Athenian love for competition and craft.; Crosslisted: Classical Studies, PJHR Humanities, A: Meaning, Interpretation (Texts), B: Analysis of the Social World (Hav: HU, A, B) |
