Additional Course Info | Class Number: 2655 This course explores European history from the height of the Roman Empire in the first century to the Renaissance and Reformation movements of the sixteenth century. The idea of ruin and the call for renewal shaped institutions in the West and guided their interactions with the rest of the world. The class introduces students to historical methods and arguments as well as content. Moving chronologically, we will consider the following topics: the Roman Imperial legacy and the rise of Christianity; monasticism and spiritual reform; feudal relations and sacred kingship; medieval towns and commerce, women and gender, chivalry and romance; religious persecution and the Crusades; print culture and popular protest, humanism and statecraft.; Enrollment Limit: 25 Social Science, A: Meaning, Interpretation (Texts), B: Analysis of the Social World (; Hav: SO, A, B) |
