Additional Course Info | Class Number: 1921 This is a topics course. Course content varies. Prerequisite: one course in History of Art at the 100- or 200-level or permission of the instructor. Enrollment preference given to majors and minors in History of Art.; Current topic description: This seminar delves into the theoretical and historiographic foundations of traditional Chinese calligraphy, an area that has received relatively little attention in modern scholarship. Despite its pivotal role in Chinese art, calligraphy's lack of a direct Western counterpart has led to its comparative neglect. By examining traditional Chinese calligraphy practices, the course aims to reassess its unique essence, exploring key aspects such as ontology, embodiment, technique, agency, ethics, politics, and religion.
