Course content varies.; Current topic description: The course explores the process of self-emancipation by slaves in the early modern Atlantic World. What was the nature of the communities that free blacks forged? What were their relationships to the empires from which they freed themselves? How was race constructed in the early modern period? Did conceptions of race change over time? Approach: Cross-Cultural Analysis (CC), Inquiry into the Past (IP); Haverford: A: Meaning, Interpretation (Texts) (A), Humanities (HU) Enrollment Cap: 35.
